Pirate costumes have been around since the romanticized time of pirating that occurred between the sixteenth century and eighteenth century. This is the time period that is epitomized in popular books, such as Treasure Island. It is also the same era that the popular Pirates of the Caribbean movie series has been based. Most pirate costumes are loosely based on the attire worn by the lowly crew membersoperating the ships during this time period.
