From Collector to Character: How Comics, Toys and Cosplay Bring Fandom to Life

For me, comics, costumes, and fandom have always gone hand in hand.

My name is Bela, and I've worked at Fantasy Costumes for more than 25 years helping customers create memorable Halloween costumes, convention looks, and cosplay ideas. In addition to my work at Fantasy Costumes, I also operate Bela's Comics, where I share my passion for comic books, toys, collectibles, and pop culture with fellow fans.

Many people also recognize me from the videos and social media content I host for Fantasy Costumes throughout the year. Whether I'm talking about new arrivals, Halloween trends, wigs, makeup, or upcoming events, I enjoy connecting with customers and sharing the excitement that makes this industry so much fun.

I also created Bela Con, an independent comic and toy convention that continues to grow each year. Bela Con brings together collectors, artists, vendors, creators, and fans who share a love for comics, toys, cosplay, and pop culture. Watching the local fan community continue to grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.

Over the years, I've learned that collectors, cosplayers, and Halloween fans are often the same people. Whether someone is collecting comics, building a costume, attending a convention, or introducing the next generation to their favorite characters, fandom is ultimately about sharing what you love with others.

Why Fans Love Collecting

Why Fans Love Collecting

Comic books, action figures, original art, posters, and collectibles allow fans to preserve memories and celebrate the stories that inspired them. Whether it's a favorite superhero, classic horror character, anime series, or independent comic creator, collecting has always been an important part of pop culture.

Collectors often enjoy the hunt as much as the items themselves. Finding a key issue, discovering a rare toy, or supporting an independent creator helps keep the hobby exciting year after year.

The Rise of Cosplay Culture

Over the last two decades, cosplay has become one of the fastest-growing parts of fandom. Conventions, comic shows, anime events, and themed gatherings have encouraged fans to express themselves through creativity and costume design.

Cosplay allows people to celebrate their favorite characters while showcasing their own personalities and artistic skills. From simple accessories to elaborate creations, every costume tells a story.

Many of the world's most recognizable costume ideas began in comic books. Over the years, movies, television shows, animation, and video games have introduced these characters to new generations of fans.

Halloween, conventions, themed parties, and cosplay events continue to keep these characters alive, proving that great stories can inspire people far beyond the page.

Why Collectors Often Become Cosplayers

Collectors and cosplayers often share the same passion. Both groups appreciate character design, storytelling, and nostalgia.

Someone who enjoys collecting comics or action figures may eventually decide to create a costume inspired by those same interests. Likewise, many cosplayers enjoy collecting artwork, toys, posters, and memorabilia related to their favorite fandoms.

In many ways, collecting and cosplay are simply two different ways of celebrating the same passion.

Chicago has become one of the best cities in America for comic fans, collectors, and cosplayers. Throughout the year, fans gather at comic conventions, anime events, toy shows, and community gatherings to celebrate the hobbies they love.

Events such as C2E2, Anime Midwest, Fan Expo Chicago, local comic swaps, and the growing independent Bela Con continue to bring together fans from every generation. These events help celebrate creators, collectors, cosplayers, artists, and small businesses that keep fandom thriving throughout the Chicago area.

Chicago has built a strong reputation for supporting creators, collectors, artists, and independent businesses that help keep pop culture alive.

Through Bela Con and other community events, collectors and creators can come together while supporting artists and independent vendors.

At Fantasy Costumes, fans can take the next step by transforming their favorite inspirations into costumes, cosplay creations, and unforgettable Halloween experiences. From wigs and makeup to accessories and complete costumes, Fantasy Costumes has helped generations of Chicago families celebrate their favorite characters.

While one business celebrates collecting and the other celebrates transformation, both share the same goal: helping people enjoy the worlds and characters they love.

One of the things I enjoy most about this hobby is meeting fellow fans. Whether you're stopping by Fantasy Costumes during Halloween season, visiting Bela's Comics, attending Bela Con, or running into me at a local comic convention, toy show, or collector event, don't hesitate to say hello.

I always enjoy talking comics, costumes, toys, conventions, and hearing about what everyone is currently collecting or creating.

After all, that's what fandom is all about—sharing the things we love with others.

So if you see me around Chicago this Halloween season or at your favorite collector event, come say hi. I'd love to hear what you're reading, collecting, or planning for your next costume!
