Portage Park, Chicago

The Portage Park neighborhood in Chicago is a fun little area filled with one of the largest Polish communities in Chicago. The shops, restaurants, and even the parks reveal this rich heritage in many ways.

The largest park located in this neighborhood is located on a full 36 acres of gorgeous land. Ironically it has the same name as the neighborhood Portage Park. It is filled with five baseball fields, a bike trail, two football fields that also double as soccer fields. This massive play land also has six tennis courts, a giant playground, and even a spot for furry friends to play. It was the hosting site for both the Pan-American Games in 1959 as well as the U.S. Olympic swimming trials in 1972. Another famous park located in Portage Park is named after Poland’s most famous pianist Chopin. This park is smaller than Portage Park but it still has a play area, a historic field house, and a sports field. The field house is equipped with an assembly hall.

The Patio Theater is the Portage Park Theater where cinema fans can enjoy new and older classic movies on one large screen. The theater is designed to take patrons back to the classic 1920’s with the interior design of the grand building. For live performances the Portage Theater is the place to be. This theater has over 1,300 seats for the guests. It even has a grand dance floor for people to swirl around while the live performance is played. The Filament Theater is another grand theater that puts on live performances for the audience. Young and old alike enjoy a variety of shows at the Filament.

Adult fun can be had when guests visit Hops & Barley. This is a massive bar and restaurants that spans two stories inside of the old historic Klafter Building. The ceilings in this hot spot span to sixteen feet high and are designed to show the brick and wooden beams. This restaurant and bar also boasts a giant 42-inch television to broadcast sports games on for the patrons.
